Pakistan’s auto industry is undergoing its biggest shift in decades, with nearly 87 percent of the 23 new vehicle models launching in 2026 expected to be electric or hybrid, as Chinese automakers rapidly expand their presence in the local market.
A Major Shift Toward Electrification
Of the 23 new vehicle models scheduled to enter Pakistan’s market between June and December 2026, nine will be fully electric and 11 will be plug-in hybrid or range-extended electric vehicles, according to data compiled by Arif Habib Limited. Only three upcoming models will rely solely on traditional petrol engines.
Chinese Brands Leading the Charge
Brands including BYD, GAC, Changan, Deepal, Avatr, Denza, and Jaecoo are expanding through partnerships with local assemblers and distributors. BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, is expected to assemble its first Pakistan-made car by mid-2026 at a new plant near Karachi, a joint venture with Mega Motor Company capable of producing up to 25,000 vehicles annually.
Why the Government Is Pushing EVs
Pakistan spends an estimated 10 to 15 billion dollars annually on crude oil and gas imports, and officials are targeting savings of around 4.5 billion dollars through gradual transport electrification. A new automotive policy is also being developed to replace the existing 2021-26 framework, aiming for new-energy vehicles to make up 30 percent of all new vehicle sales by 2030.
Challenges That Remain
Limited charging infrastructure, high upfront costs, and consumer hesitation remain key obstacles to wider EV adoption in Pakistan. Even so, with petrol prices having crossed Rs300 per litre earlier this year, more buyers are weighing the long-term savings of electric ownership against higher purchase prices.
