WHO Prepositions Medical Supplies for 380,000 Pakistanis as Monsoon Season Begins

The World Health Organization has partnered with Pakistan to preposition medical supplies for more than 380,000 people ahead of the 2026 monsoon season, which runs from July to September and has historically triggered flooding, disease outbreaks, and health emergencies across the country.

Nine Trucks Dispatched Across Pakistan

Nine trucks carrying essential supplies have already been dispatched to provinces across Pakistan as of June 25, 2026, with additional stock held on WHO premises for rapid distribution as needed. The cargo includes antibiotics, analgesics, intravenous infusions, antivirals, antihypertensives, antiallergic medications, water purification tablets, infection prevention and control kits, and laboratory supplies for detecting vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue, as well as waterborne illnesses.

Why Pakistan Is Especially Vulnerable

Pakistan ranks among the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change according to the World Risk Report 2024, and the Global Climate Index 2026 places it among the 15 countries most affected by extreme weather events since 1995. The country has not yet fully recovered from the devastating 2022 floods, which triggered a surge in malaria cases that is still being addressed, with 1.8 million cases reported in 2025 despite a 10 percent reduction from 2024.

A Major Milestone in KP: Neonatal Tetanus Elimination

Alongside the monsoon preparedness effort, Pakistan marked a significant public health victory on June 21, 2026, when WHO pre-validated the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The milestone means around 94 percent of Pakistan’s population now lives in areas where neonatal tetanus transmission is under controlled limits, with Balochistan the only remaining province still working toward the target.

Vaccination Progress Continues

WHO and UNICEF supported the vaccination of 5.4 million pregnant women and women of childbearing age in Pakistan during 2025, including more than 870,000 in KP alone. Pakistan has averted 2.6 million child deaths through vaccination programmes and reduced paralytic polio cases by 99.8 percent since the programme began, while 80 percent of the country’s population now lives in neonatal tetanus-free areas.

What milestone did Khyber Pakhtunkhwa achieve in June 2026?
WHO pre-validated the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in KP, leaving Balochistan as the only remaining province to reach this goal.

How many malaria cases did Pakistan have in 2025?
Pakistan reported 1.8 million malaria cases in 2025, a 10 percent reduction from 2024, but still elevated due to the ongoing impact of the 2022 floods.
