UAE Plans AED 6 Billion Highway and Transit Network Linking Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

The UAE is set for a major upgrade in inter-emirate connectivity, with a new AED 6 billion federal highway and mass transit network planned to link Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman and ease daily commuter congestion.

A Major New Federal Highway

Central to the plan is the Fourth Federal Highway project, a 68-kilometre stretch featuring six to eight lanes in each direction, along with 10 major interchanges and four flyovers. The project was discussed at the first 2026 meeting of the UAE Infrastructure and Housing Council, chaired by Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei.

A New Mass Transit Network

To address heavy daily commuting demand, officials reviewed a study for an integrated mass transit network featuring 10 main routes with Bus Rapid Transit systems and dedicated lanes. The network is designed to link directly with existing metro stations and city centres, giving commuters an alternative to private vehicles.

Sharjah’s Own AED 750 Million Push

Separately, Sharjah’s Ruler announced AED 750 million worth of internal and main road projects connecting Sharjah and Dubai, including a new tunnel beneath Al Taawun Roundabout and a new Noor Road extending from Al Orooba Street into Dubai, expected to open by the end of 2026.

Why This Matters for Commuters

The combined projects reflect the UAE’s ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision to tackle traffic congestion as the country’s urban population continues to grow rapidly across the northern emirates. Officials say the new BRT routes and federal highway capacity are designed to reduce reliance on private vehicles while supporting the country’s broader emissions reduction goals.
