UAE’s New AI Traffic Cameras: What Drivers Need to Know in 2026

The UAE has rolled out AI-powered traffic cameras in 2026 that can detect multiple violations at once, alongside tougher penalties for tailgating and reckless driving. Here is what drivers need to know.

What the New AI Cameras Detect

Effective since March 1, 2026, new AI-powered cameras can identify speeding, tailgating, lane discipline, seatbelt compliance, and mobile phone use simultaneously, replacing the older fixed radar and red-light camera system. These cameras work day and night using AI recognition technology.

Tougher Tailgating Penalties

Tailgating fines have increased significantly to AED 1,000 with 6 black points. Drivers are advised to keep at least a 2-second following distance, extending to 4 seconds in wet conditions, as the new cameras actively monitor for unsafe following distances.

Repeat Offender Penalties Have Doubled

Motorists caught reoffending within one year now face doubled impoundment time and release fees. Speeding remains one of the costliest violations, with fines reaching AED 3,000, 23 black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment for exceeding limits by more than 80 km/h.

Stricter Vehicle Inspections

Vehicle technical inspections are now more thorough, checking ADAS systems, tire pressure monitors, and using digital brake testing. Vehicles that fail inspection cannot have their registration renewed until issues are resolved.

How to Check and Pay Fines

Drivers can check and pay fines through the RTA website, Dubai Police app, or Nol Pay app, with early payment within 60 days qualifying for up to a 35 percent discount. Fines from fixed cameras typically appear within 24 hours, while mobile camera violations can take 2 to 3 working days to process.
